Santorini

Mitigate a Volcano

Briefing

You and your team are relaxing on the Aeschylus and having a discussion over some mid morning tea when suddenly alarms sound through the station. Over the loudspeakers you hear: “Squads K6 Beta, K7 Alpha and X9 Phi report to the hanger bay with your flight suits immediately.”

You quickly gather your things and head to the hanger bay to see a few other teams of Vanguards already assembling. When all are assembled a operations director addresses you all:

“Vanguards, there has been a series of catastrophic natural disasters around Europe, earthquakes, avalanches, and volcanoes about to blow. Each squad will be assigned to a different location and try to aid in the evacuation and mitigation of the damage to the locations.”

Your team is assigned to Santorini, a Greek island situated around a long dormant volcano. Given this information you believe that your tasks will include: saving civilians, maintaining or quickly repairing infrastructure for evacuation, and tactically trying to release pressure from the volcano.

Loadout: You take no weapons, One large explosive charge, Four small explosive charges, and one prototype “lancing” charge that arrives 25 mins into the mission.

 On the Ground

As your team flies into the atmosphere you get additional details about the mission:

Volcanic eruptions are essentially a buildup of pressurized gasses and magma that build up to the point of eruption. As this point there is nothing you can do to stop the explosion but it may be mitigated by 1: releasing pressure from the volcano by attempting to puncture into its base, 2: trying to carve out a side of the volcano to encourage a direction for the explosion to go, and 3 blocking the main vent to stall the explosion (though this will result in a more catastrophic eruption).

Your goals in order of importance: Aid in the evacuation of the island, attempt to mitigate the damage to the island in any way possible, and discern if there is any foul play in this eruption

Scenario notes

A roll on the environment table is made every 6 minutes, for 4 players, 6.5 for 2-3.

Roll a d6 for the directions of the attacks.
1. North, 2 East, 3 South, 4 North, 5/6, the direction that players blew the volcano (if applicable)

It takes 60 minutes for a full evacuation.

The smaller island takes 10 mins to evac
Environment hitting a port adds 2 minutes.

If a port gets destroyed it adds 5 minutes to an evac.

If a path is blown through the mountain in the southeast it subtracts 7 minutes from the evac.

Extra equipment

Lance Charge:

Can be used to try to puncture the volcano (adding 1 to the timer of the explosion) or used to clear another path to the airport shortening evac by 5 mins and mitigating some environmental effects. Failing any part of the lancing shortens the explosion timer.

Successfully lancing the volcano requires a Daunting roll with no bonuses, or a challenging roll if a small explosive was used to make a better angle. Successfully lancing the volcano will add one to the timer.

Large explosives can either be used to blow a hole in the side of the volcano, or used to instantly

counter any environmental effect.

Small explosives can counter environmental effects with a challenging roll or a doable roll from an engineer.

If the players fly over the volcano and look inside they need a challenging fortitude roll to be able to get near the mouth of the volcano. If they look inside it appears as though half of the volcano is dormant and the other half is frozen mid eruption as if someone had paused a playback of it. This makes no logical sense and further investigation reveals no sign of technology. If something is dropped into the ‘frozen’ side it bounces off a barrier that seems to be made of darkness.

If the outside of the volcano is investigated, with a challenging wit check the players notice that the shadows from the peak extend longer than it should and that around the volcano there are shadows like it is already erupting. This also does not make any logical sense

When the volcano is one roll away from exploding Corvin shows up on the beach by the southernmost city. He is noticed if anyone is flying by the area.

When the players approach Corvin says: “This is a good system you have going here. It has accomplished much, but alas it is still a system bound by the inevitability of entropy.

If asked to come with the players he insists he's fine.

If he is asked about the strange activity of the volcano he will grow curious. If the descriptions of shadows are mentioned he will be surprised, grow pensive for a moment and then bid the players good day and disappear.

If he is attacked he will brush off his duster and a massive gust of wind will knock the player away from him. When attacked a second time he will complain about the players inhospitality and disappear in a gust of wind.

If you have investigated the volcano and tell Corvin about it he will seem interested and thank the players, and disappears.

Stragglers are number of players multiplied by 2 in major cities

Environment Table

Overarching Danger

  • Eruption:

    • Timer (8)

    • Delay: Add one to the timer by successfully releasing pressure.

    • Trigger: The volcano erupts! The immediate area of the volcano is covered in lava making it unnavigable, the air immediately around the volcano is unnavigable due to ash, and other environment rolls have harsher effects.

  1. Tsunami!

    • A tremor causes a giant wave to be directed toward a seaport.(Timer 1)

    • Weakens a structure on hit

    • Can be countered with a small explosive

  2. Foreshock/Aftershock:

    • A small earthquake shakes the island, weakening all structures in zone 1.(post eruption also weakens structures in zone 2)

  3. Wave of Ash (max 3)

    • Building gasses fling ash up in the air, causing a cloud of ash to rest over 1 additional zone (1, 2, 3)

    • Zones with ash cause -2 to all rolls while flying in them (Post eruption -4)

  4. Volcanic Bomb

    • A volley of boulders are launched from the volcano and are on a collision course with an evacuation vehicle (Post eruption two evacs)

  5. Pyroclastic Flow (Timer 1)

    • A volatile flow of rock and gas flows out the volcano and into bay towards a seaport  (Two directions post explosion)

    • If it arrives unhindered it will demolish a structure

Opportunity:

      6.   Simmer: (max 1 roll)

  • Pressure builds, but nothing else happens
