SURVEILLANCE in the Rainforest

Briefing

You are tasked to stake out and investigate a possible Machiavellian laboratory in the Amazon rain forest in Brazil. There is a research laboratory in the rain forest sponsored by the government of Brazil that we suspect has gone rogue or otherwise been infiltrated by Machiavellians. A direct approach would likely give any bad actors enough time to hide or abscond with whatever they are working on. Your task is to get on the ground, set up a base and stakeout the location to discern if there are any bad actors at play. This mission is likely to include stealth, espionage, and potentially large scale combat. All weapons will be given silencers on loadout.

 On the Ground

You set up a discrete camp about half a mile away from the lab. How do you set up your camp?

Nothing of interest happens on this first day. Night is approaching, does someone stay up? 

In the middle of the night, you awake to an explosion a few hundred feet away from you and then you hear a loud rushing sound and notice all of your technology has gone dead. You quickly surmise that an emp has taken out all your equipment and that is very likely that (somehow) you have been made. As you realize this you hear vehicles starting up in the distance from the laboratory, your lookout sees that they are flatbed trucks with armored Machiavellians with machine guns heading in your general direction. You also see what looks like several camera drones flying around the general area to create a perimeter You surmise that your flight suits will take six hours to recover, allowing you to fly away or call for backup. Your objectives are as follows: Survive the night and avoid capture, and if possible figure out what the Machiavellians are up to in the facility. 



Scenario notes

The lookout roll a daunting wit check and notice that the lab shot off the EMP but that it was clearly not aimed directly at the encampment. 

Players can still wear their flight suits to gain 2 armor, but will be somewhat worse at sneaking. Drones are also inactive.

Detonators on the shaped charges from the engineer do not work (but can be set off at range by shooting them. 

The mission starts at midnight and suits regain power at 6 AM

The party can move roughly 1 space every 10 mins stealthily or 1 every 5 minutes briskly.

Dense forest takes twice as long to traverse, but makes all stealth checks one category easier.

Cleared forest takes half as long to traverse but makes all stealth checks one category harder.

Water is neutral for traversal time and sneaking. 


The number of squads are equal to 3 times the players. They patrol starting at the 

The number of people in the squads are equal to half number of players (rounded up). These squads have Mac Grunts with light armor.


The environment table is rolled every time the party either moves through 4 spaces or 40 minutes passes (whichever comes first)

If the players take down a squad they can find a radio on one of the members. If they take out a speedboat they will find a piece of paper with instructions, implying that the Machiavellians were warned ahead of time. 

The laboratory itself has grunts (in full armor) equal to the number of players +1 patrolling around its perimeter, but if they sneak in there are scientists hiding in a sleeping room and a botanical laboratory. 

At 5:50 two speed boats will leave from the compound. These can either be distractions for a helicopter loading up with gear back at the compound or one of them can have the Machiavellian tech.

  1. Sweeping drone

    • A scout drone goes through the area.

  2. Inhospitable terrain,

    • The area you move into is surprisingly dense and hard to traverse. Movement takes twice as long, but it might make a good spot for an ambush.

  3. Firebomb (max 2)

  • Ahead of you in the distance a fire is started, cutting you off. 

  1. A Pack of Howler Monkeys!?! (Max 1)

    • You stumble upon a pack of howler monkeys. They howl. 

  2. Forward Squad: (Max 2)

    • You hear a speedboat go down the river, you expect they are dropping off troops up ahead.

  3. All’s Quiet (max 1)

    • You don’t stumble across anything
